Why I Joined is an effort to discover those who put on the uniform every day, what motivated them to volunteer, and why they do what they do.  The goal of this blog is not to persuade to a political viewpoint (although we tend to be conservative) or to be a pro-military puff piece (although we are very pro-military).  Instead, the goal is to let everyday soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen to tell their own story in their own words.

The focus of this blog is the newer soldiers, those that joined after 9/11 during a state of war.  As such, this is not a collection of war stories, but rather a collection of pre-war stories.

Due to the sensitive security nature that many troops face we will not be listing any information that could compromise them or jeopardize their families.  We will not list the hometowns, military occupations, or any other clearly-identifying information.  Also, we will block comments that reveal this information.  At the service member’s request we will create an assumed name.  When we do so it will be apparent to the reader.  Finally, we will never use the real name of service members that are mentioned but not featured.  All other information will be accurate to the best of our ability.
